Una m\u00e1quina cultural con alma propia, una instituci\u00f3n nacida del polvo del barrio y una de las fuerzas m\u00e1s decisivas para entender c\u00f3mo encaramos la m\u00fasica moderna. Todo comenz\u00f3 en los patios o los yards de la ciudad de Kingston,  Jamaica, a finales de los a\u00f1os 40, donde la escasez y la supervivencia se transformaron en pura creatividad. Hay que recordar que Jamaica a\u00fan viv\u00eda bajo la sombra colonial brit\u00e1nica, con escasez de medios de reproducci\u00f3n musical a cualquier nivel,  con pocas radios, aun menos oportunidades para sobrevivir en ese mundo,  y pr\u00e1cticamente ning\u00fan acceso a la m\u00fasica en vivo para la clase trabajadora. Unos tipos que no esperaron a ser invitados a ninguna fiesta, construyeron la suma propia. \u00bfC\u00f3mo? Levantando torres de altavoces como si fueran catedrales de bajos, ensamblando amplificadores caseros y haciendo girar platos con vinilos sin descanso. De  esa creaci\u00f3n surgi\u00f3 el  Selector, un apasionad@ que tomaba el mando de la estructura a base  de vinilos especialmente seleccionados y \u00fanicos, tra\u00eddos desde lejos, pero cargados de soul, jazz y rhythm &amp; blues. De sus capacidades, la conversi\u00f3n de puro ocio a acto ceremonial, generando una comunidad al un\u00edsono de las bases r\u00edtmicas proyectadas al aire. El sound system muto de acto celebrativo para convertirse en un aut\u00e9ntico campo de batalla. Sound system  contra Sound system. Barrio contra barrio. Operadores como Clement Coxsone Dodd, Arthur Duke Reid y Prince Buster se convirtieron en estrategas del sonido, cazadores de exclusivas, visionarios con mentalidad guerrillera. Viajaron a Estados Unidos, rebuscaron en tiendas, encontraron rarezas y aut\u00e9nticas joyas a las que  borraban las etiquetas, para proteger su identidad  como si fueran secretos de Estado. As\u00ed naci\u00f3 el dubplate: piezas \u00fanicas, dise\u00f1adas para derribar al rival en el clash o encuentro en la calle. Porque el clash no fue solo un batalla de m\u00fasica, sino la lucha por el poder, la reputaci\u00f3n, y el control absoluto de la pista. Y a su lado, el deejay o el MC jamaicano , que tomaba el micr\u00f3fono para no soltarlo y animar las fiesta y las transiciones de temas musicales, hablando,  improvisando, provocando e incluso, conectando. Ah\u00ed, justo ah\u00ed, discutiblemente se  fabric\u00f3 la semilla del hip-hop, del grime, del jungle. A finales de los 50 y durante los 60 lleg\u00f3 el punto de quiebre. El flujo de R&amp;B americano se cort\u00f3, y los productores locales tomaron el control. Del exabrupto naci\u00f3 el ska:  con su cadencia r\u00e1pida, brillante, con metales que cortaban el aire. Luego lleg\u00f3 el rocksteady, bajando el tempo, profundizando el groove y dejando espacio para que el bajo hablara m\u00e1s claro. Estudios como Studio One o Treasure Isle se convirtieron en f\u00e1bricas de fuego, produciendo temas dise\u00f1ados no para la radio, sino para las pistas de baile. Porque en ese contexto la \u00fanica m\u00e9trica v\u00e1lida era la reacci\u00f3n del cuerpo, es decir, si el tema no hac\u00eda moverse a la gente, no serv\u00eda. As\u00ed de simple. El sound system se consolid\u00f3 como juez supremo. Y en ese circuito nacieron himnos trans generacionales, artistas y leyendas. \u00bfLa \u00fanica regla?: la m\u00fasica no estaba terminada hasta que no hac\u00eda vibrar un stack en Kingston. El peak time o la edad dorada del Sound system que no solo sonaba, hablaba,  protestaba y  elevaba. Fue la era del roots reggae, donde cada bajo transmit\u00eda el  mensaje y  cada eco lo cargaba de historia, creando el espacio necesario para que King Tubby entrara en escena cambiando la din\u00e1mica del juego para siempre. Una filosof\u00eda que viaj\u00f3 desde Kingston hasta Berl\u00edn, Nueva York o Londres. Al mismo tiempo, voces como U-Roy o Big Youth convirtieron el micr\u00f3fono en arma po\u00e9tica: narraron la calle, denunciaron, celebraron, improvisaron. Desde los 80 en adelante, el sound system no desapareci\u00f3: mut\u00f3. Lleg\u00f3 lo digital, el golpe del \u201cSleng Teng\u201d, y todo cambi\u00f3 de textura. El dancehall aceler\u00f3, se volvi\u00f3 m\u00e1s crudo, m\u00e1s sint\u00e9tico, m\u00e1s directo al cuerpo. Y mientras tanto, el sonido viaj\u00f3. Cruz\u00f3 oc\u00e9anos con la di\u00e1spora y ech\u00f3 ra\u00edces en Londres, Nueva York, Toronto. All\u00ed germin\u00f3 en jungle, drum &amp; bass, grime. Ha vivido en los patios o calles, en sesiones underground, y  m\u00e1s recientemente tambi\u00e9n en festivales globales, en estudios, en archivos o  en la memoria colectiva. Los operadores han construido sus stacks como ingenieros artesanos, han cortado dubplates exclusivos y  se han enfrentaron en batallas donde el sonido ha decidido qui\u00e9n mandaba. Lo que empez\u00f3 como respuesta a la escasez se ha convertido en un modelo global de experiencia musical.
